Labour-intensive areas at Changi Airport, in particular the build-up and break down of aviation cargo, pose great challenges for Singapore to keep up with the rapid growth of its aviation sector. With the aim of automating this process, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) selected and funded TUMCREATE under Aviation Challenge 2.
As part of the challenge, our team successfully developed a high ”Technology Readiness Level” system combining sensor-based robot technology, novel mechatronics and advanced control. With this, we are first in the world to address the high-mix, high-volume issues of air cargo that makes automation difficult.
In October 2017, SPEEDCARGO successfully constructed a P6P air freight pallet measuring 3 meters in height and 4 tonnes in weight. We achieved a packing density of 86%.
